the ministry of magic
A place infamous for its red tape, the Ministry of Magic does not function as the well-oiled hive it was meant to be. Though each department is subject to the decisions of the Minister of Magic and his Cabinet, departmental heads, which have all but absolute rule over their respective divisions, often have (and follow) their own agenda. There is very little in terms of lateralism when it comes to running the Ministry; everything works (or doesn't) according to a hierarchy that gives interns and junior staff little autonomy, and enemies of the state which are embedded in the system a degree of cover so long as they accomplish their various tasks while keeping up Ministry-sanctioned appearances.

Some of the various departments of the Ministry of Magic are detailed below. Learn more about clearance levels here.

THE CABINET
Similar to its British Muggle counterpart, the Cabinet of the Ministry of Magic consists of the Minister for Magic, the Home Secretary, the Foreign Secretary, the Chancellor of Exchequer, the heads of all Ministry departments, and the internal Cabinet staff, which consists of the Senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic, the Junior Assistant to the Minister for Magic, and the Adviser to the Minister of Magic. There is also the support staff; all members are carefully vetted, often hired due to family connections, and ensure the well being of the Cabinet through frequent and regular tea and biscuits runs.

MINISTER FOR MAGIC: Millicent Bagnold (Clearence level: 8)
The leader of the British wizarding world, the Minister for Magic holds the highest rank in the Ministry, chairs the Wizengamot, and liaises with the Muggle world through its governmental counterpart, the Prime Minister.

HOME SECRETARY: Solomon Baddock (CL: 8)
Oversees all domestic affairs, including national security, citizenship, housing, health care, policing, etc.

FOREIGN SECRETARY: Winky Crockett (CL: 8)
Oversees foreign relations; has a permanent seat in the International Confederation of Wizards.

CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER: Oswin Beamish (CL: 8)
Deals with all matters pertaining to money.

SENIOR UNDERSECRETARY: Edgar Bones (formerly) (CL: 8)
Presides over internal Ministerial affairs; the ipso facto Head of the Departmental Heads. Expect the person occupying this position to know all the dirt the Ministry would like to conceal and forget.

ADVISER to the MINISTER: (CL: 7)
JUNIOR ASSISTANT to the MINISTER: (CL: 7)
SUPPORT STAFF

THE DEPARTMENT OF MAGICAL LAW ENFORCEMENT
A huge, sprawling department with several divisions, the DMLE is considered the most influential department in the Ministry. WIZENGAMOT ADMINISTRATION SERVICES

Along with the Wizengamot's registries and support staff, this office houses the Ministry's Prosecution Services, which prosecutes, on behalf of the wizarding public and the Ministry, criminal offences. Staff includes barristers, paralegal personnel, and clerks.

BARRISTERS: Amelia Bones (SENIOR), Barty Crouch Jr (JUNIOR), Dempster Wiggleswade (CHIEF)

THE WIZENGAMOT
As both the legislative and judicial branch of the Ministry, the Wizengamot wields an enormous amount of power. Laws require its stamp of approval before they can be passed, and people are prosecuted before its members, which then vote in favour of the defendant's innocence -- or against. The Wizengamot consists of 50 seats, ten of which belong to the Minister and the Minister's support staff, including Senior Undersecretary; eight of which belong to departmental heads; two belonging to the Chief Warlock and the British Youth Representative; whilst the remaining thirty seats are equally divided amongst the personnel of the Wizengamot Administration Services and the public (the selection process is shrouded in mystery and, quite possibly, corruption, as more often than not, members of the public tend to be eminent in one way or another). The Court Scribe, acting as a stenographer, does not have a seat.
